Title: Investigation of hydrogen positions in hcp-FeHx: technical development of neutron diffraction experiment under HP-HT condition

Title: Compressibility and blue-shifting hydrogen bond of magnesium hydroxyfluoride, Mg(OH)F

Hydrous minerals transport water deep into the Earth’s mantle via subduction slabs, forming a significant part of global water circulation. Highly mobile in fluids, halogens (F, Cl, Br, and I) are together transported in subduction zones. The nearly equal radii permit F- to be incorporated into hydrous minerals in moderate amounts by substituting OH-, and fluorine is supposed to be the most abundant halogen in the mantle. While water plays an important role in deep Earth’s operation by changing melting temperature, viscosity, and diffusion rate of mantle materials, studies have shown that fluorine could affect minerals’ water storage capacity and phase transition conditions, which would definitely result in changes of physical properties and phase stability.
Herein, compressibility and spectroscopic properties of magnesium hydroxyfluoride, Mg(OH)F, have been investigated by in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and FT-IR spectroscopy in a diamond anvil cell up to ~20 GPa at room temperature. Without any phase transition being observed, the pressure-volume correlation is well fitted by the third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state with K0 = 72(±3) GPa, K0′ = 4.4(±0.3), V0 = 145.4(±0.2) Å3. Identical to the other compounds crystallizing in the diaspore-type str ucture, higher contraction occurs along the c direction of Mg(OH)F, which we attribute to channels between the double-octahedral chains. Locating at 3679 cm-1, 3645 cm-1, and 3535 cm-1 under ambient conditions, the O-H stretching mode frequencies suggest that the hydrogen-bonding interaction between hydrogen and fluorine is weak. The negative pressure dependence of the O-H stretching mode frequencies indicate that the O-H covalent bond shortens and the O-H⋯F hydrogen bond does not strengthen under compression. Other fluorine-bearing minerals such as brucite and phase A will be further investigated by structural and spectroscopic analyses to understand fluorine’s substitutional effects on compressibility and hydrogen-bonding geometry of hydrous minerals under high pressure.
