Title:Relationship between Mg/Fe ratio and Raman Spectrum of Olivine

Micro-Raman spectroscopy is a nondestructive analytical technique that can be used to study the composition of olivine, an essential mineral in crustal magmatic processes. It is useful in cases such as meteorite analysis where it is necessary to preserve the integrity of the sample. Raman spectra of olivine display two characteristic Raman peaks (K1 and K2) around 820 cm-1 and 850 cm-1. In the past, Kuebler et al (2006) among others have proposed models for extracting olivine Mg# =(Mg/(Fe+Mg)) from the positions of these peaks, but the accuracy of these models depend upon the calibration of each individual Raman spectrometer. Here we propose a model to extract olivine Mg numbers from the distance between these peak positions (ΔK=K2-K1). This model eliminates error that depends on calibration of individual machines. Such a model has been proposed in the past by Enami et al. (2008), but never demonstrated with data from multiple sample sources. For our model, Raman spectrum data of olivine grains with known Mg# were sourced from several published papers, as well as measured at University of Hawaii. Analysis comparing Raman data with Mg# indicates a linear trend present for an Mg# range of 62-96. Further work is needed to determine if this linear trend continues throughout a larger Mg# range.
